This document provides an outline of a prototype version of an environment that gives citizens unified access to open data and enables them to design, share and co-create custom visualisations that can help to raise awareness about city issues. This forms part of DECODE’s wider vision of data as a common good, where data processing is democratised through the use of transparent algorithms and intuitive interfaces for information visualisation and exploration.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the prototype, the report uses open data from the city of Barcelona to show some sample functionalities of the environment for visualising data from a single source and combining data from multiple sources.

The report is structured as follows:

  • Section 1 provides an introduction

  • Section 2 presents the existing urban data exploration tools that relate to the prototype

  • Section 3 describes Barcelona Now’s environment

  • Section 4 showcases the prototype’s capabilities

  • Section 5 depicts a roadmap for the improvement of the environment and integration with other pilots

  • Section 6 discusses conclusions and future directions
