On Wednesday 10 May, Nesta hosted a half-day interactive session inviting delegates from a range of disciplines to imagine future scenarios around how we produce, store, manage and use personal data. This event was specifically designed for policymakers, designers, data scientists, researchers and activists.
For some time, Nesta has been exploring what types of innovation might arise if people were to have greater control over their data. Beyond the benefits of increased privacy, we are interested in the potential for people to engage in more conscious sharing and pooling of data for social good, and the new business models that might emerge in a world where individuals are able to more easily monetise access to their personal information.
At the event, we heard from a range of speakers who are pioneering new approaches, apps and services for privacy-aware personal data management. This was followed by an interactive session where attendees were invited to imagine future scenarios about digital identity several decades from now.
The session will help to inform a research report for DECODE (DEcentralised Citizen Owned Data Ecosystem). DECODE is a European Commission-funded project that aims to develop and pilot tools that give individuals greater control over their data, helping them keep it private or share it as they see fit.
